The 10 Steps of Korean Layering
What are the different stages of Korean layering?
Korean Skincare, the opposite of the "skinimalism" trend, consists of layering skincare products morning and night to maximize their effectiveness. This layering, which can be as many as 10 layers, is called layering .
The order of application of the different products is essential: the first ones allow you to cleanse and prepare the skin for the following treatments, the intermediate ones are targeted treatments and the last ones aim to lock everything in to keep the active ingredients inside the skin and protect it from external aggressions.
So what are these 10 steps and why are they beneficial?
Oil-based cleaning
An oil-based cleanser, also known as a makeup remover, is at the forefront of your skincare routine. It comes in the form of an oil or balm and works to lift away and dissolve oil-based impurities like makeup, sunscreen, and sebum to clear pores. Another benefit of oil cleansers is that they're hydrating and nourishing. This step is essential, especially for oily skin.
Use: Morning and/or evening
The water-based cleaner
The water-based cleanser is the second step in your skincare routine. Together with the oil-based cleanser, they form a double cleanse . This foaming cleanser is used to deeply unclog pores of water-based residue. This ensures that subsequent products penetrate deeply into the skin and helps maintain the skin's pH balance.
This soap comes in the form of cleansing water, gel, foam, lotion, or cream. For oily skin, it is best to choose a gel cleanser, while foam, lotion, or cream cleanser is better tolerated by dry skin.
Use: Morning and evening (optional in the morning for normal to dry skin)
The exfoliant
The third step of layering is to exfoliate your face in the evening after cleansing. Exfoliation is a key step in the Korean skincare routine because it helps remove dead skin cells, evens and smooths skin tone, and promotes cell renewal. There are two main types: physical exfoliants, such as scrubs, and chemical exfoliants, such as AHAs and BHAs. Chemical exfoliants, which are less harsh on the skin, are generally favored in K-beauty routines.
Use: 1 to 2 times per week
The toner
Toner works to close open pores and remove dead skin that builds up on the top layer of skin. It removes any residue left behind from cleansing as well as limescale, rebalancing the skin's pH to prepare it for the next steps of treatment. Unlike their traditional Western counterparts, Korean toners prioritize hydration and nourishment, adding an extra layer of refreshment to keep the complexion revitalized.
Use: Morning and evening
The essence
This water-based formula is designed to hydrate the skin from within and enhance radiance to brighten the complexion. Its watery consistency penetrates deeply and evaporates quickly. By ensuring the skin is properly hydrated, it becomes less prone to irritation. Essences can also be available in spray form. Wait a few minutes for everything to be absorbed before moving on to the next step.
Use: Morning and evening
The serum/ampoule
Serums and ampoules are powerful formulas that target specific skin concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. These products, applied to slightly damp skin, are designed to improve skin health. Ampoules are known to have an even higher concentration than serums to provide intensive treatment and optimal results. Be careful, ampoule treatments should be used for a limited time to avoid damaging the skin.
Use: Morning and evening
The mask
Face masks have become a staple of Korean skincare. They deeply nourish and hydrate the skin while addressing specific issues. Soaked in a wealth of active ingredients (like hyaluronic acid and vitamins), masks offer a quick and effective solution. There are several types, including sheet masks, wash-off masks, and overnight masks. All you have to do is customize your routine according to your desires and needs.
-> Tips! Do not leave it longer than the indicated time as this can have the opposite effect. The sheet mask will dry out and try to draw moisture out of the skin.
Use: 1 to 2 times per week (exception for certain sheet masks which can be used daily)
Eye care
The more delicate and sensitive skin around the eyes requires special care, making eye cream an important step in K-Beauty. Eye creams, which can be replaced with eye patches or masks, target cell rejuvenation and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, dark circles, and puffiness.
Use: Morning and evening
Moisturizing cream
Once all the active ingredients are applied to the face, the moisturizer will act as a protective barrier. By retaining moisture, moisturizers keep the skin smooth and supple throughout the day.
Moisturizers generally come in cream form, but they also come in gel, lotion, and oil forms.
Use: Morning and evening
Sun protection
One of the distinctive features of Korean skincare is the daily application of sunscreen to the face, even in winter. It protects against harmful UV rays and prevents skin aging and hyperpigmentation. If you have dry skin, you can use a cream-based sunscreen, while if you have oily skin, gel or water-based formulas that regulate oil production are preferable.
Use: Every day, reapply several times a day as needed
