AHA, BHA, PHA, LHA récap complet

AHA, BHA, PHA, LHA are all chemical exfoliants. We find them in many products, but how do they differ? How do you know if they are all suitable for your skin type? And when should you use them?

After reading this article, these acids will hold no more secrets for you! You will finally be able to create your personalized routine, adapted to your needs ✨

🌿AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)

AHAs are generally derived from fruits, milk, or sugarcane.

Actions:

Chemical exfoliation works on the surface by dissolving dead skin cells, leaving the skin smoother and more radiant. AHAs help with hydration and stimulate cell renewal.

For which problems?

AHAs are recommended for dull complexions, hyperpigmentation, fine lines or wrinkles, and dry or dehydrated skin.

Caution!

It is recommended to use them preferably in the evening, to avoid exposing weakened skin to external agents. These acids are photosensitizing, so it is mandatory to protect yourself with sunscreen the next day to avoid irritation. For sensitive skin, it is advisable to introduce them into your routine gradually. You can also opt for lactic and mandelic acids to start, which are less potent and therefore less irritating than glycolic acid.

🌿BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acids)

This usually refers to salicylic acid, which is an aspirin derivative.

Actions:

BHAs exfoliate deeper AND inside the pores. They dissolve excess sebum and impurities embedded in the pores. They are also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and are generally better tolerated than AHAs.

For which problems?

Salicylic acid is ideal for oily or combination skin prone to acne, enlarged pores, and blackheads.

Caution!

Even though BHAs are less irritating than AHAs, they can still dry out the skin and should therefore be combined with a moisturizing agent. Their use is preferably in the evening, without forgetting sun protection the next morning.

🌿PHA (Polyhydroxy Acids)

Actions:

PHAs exfoliate the skin on the surface. Composed of larger molecules than AHAs, PHAs therefore penetrate less deeply and thus irritate the skin surface less. They are also very moisturizing and antioxidant.

For which problems?

These acids are better tolerated by sensitive and reactive skin. If you are new to exfoliants, we advise you to start with PHAs. They are also recommended for rosacea and mild eczema problems.

Caution!

Always apply sunscreen to protect your skin after use. For deep pigment spots, these acids are often not sufficient.

🌿LHA (Lipo Hydroxy Acid)

LHAs are actually derivatives of BHAs.

Actions:

LHA dissolves excess sebum and impurities from pores like BHA, with the difference that it acts more gradually and penetrates more slowly. It is therefore less irritating to the skin. LHA also has antioxidant and sebum-regulating properties.

For which problems?

These acids are recommended for sensitive skin prone to acne and for daily exfoliation.

Caution!

Even though it is less potent and less aggressive for the skin, LHA remains an exfoliant and must therefore always be accompanied by sunscreen.

▶️ Since these acids target different problems, it is not uncommon to find products composed of several of these exfoliants.
